West Coast – 6 Amazing Days

We´ll visit some of the most important places of Lisbon, such as, the Marquis of Pombal roundabout, Eduard the 7th Park, the historical city centre and the train station of Rossio.

While visiting we will also know the best this city has to offer: the Church of St Anthony, the Cathedral, breathtaking belvedere’s and also the picturesque quarter of Alfama ( Al – Hamma).
And let us not forget the Praça do Comércio square, mighty with his Arch of Triumph.
In Bairro Alto there will be a stop to visit one of the most beautiful churches of Portugl, São Roque. Then afterwards we´ll move west where we´ll visit the monuments of our golden period, The Discoveries, such as: the Monastery of Saint Jerome, highest symbol of the golden age; the Landmark of the Discoveries, and the icon of the city, the Belém Tower, that rises symbolically in the point where the ships departed to discover the oceans their departures.

But wait, there´s more, because we end the tour in Lisbon we´ll savor the worldwide known Pastéis de Belém, the originals.

Leaving Lisbon, we´ll arrive at Sintra, where we enter a world of mysticism, occult, legends, magic, and fairy tale like palaces. Declared World Heritage site by Unesco since 1992, and European Romantic and Cultural Capital since 1995.

After the visit to this emblematic quaint little village, we´ll stop to lunch, before we arrive at the town of Mafra which is famous for its Convent/Palace, ordered to be built by D. João V in the 18th century.

After the visit to this lovely town and is majestic palace we´ll move towards the medieval village of Obidos, where we will rest for the night.

Departing he hotel, we follow the Atlantic Coast route where we´ll reach the fisherman´s town of Peniche in which the towen and the ocean are undividable. It´s one the biggest traditional fishing ports of Potugal and a major atlantic center of touristic – maritime activities ( here we can board a boat to the island of Berlengas if the weather allows it)

Before reaching the beach, the visit of Peniche wouldn´t be concluded without a stop in the historic city centre, the sanctuary of our Lady of Remédios, the churches of Saint Pedro and Misericórdia, also highlighted is the Fort of Peniche, built in the 16th century with the purpose of defending the coast along side with the Fort of Praia da Consolação and the Fort of Berlengas.
These three Forts where of extreme historical importance to Portugal in several moments, with the focus on its status of political prison during the Estado Novo regime.

Return to the Hotel in Obidos.

Today we´ll go to the town of Caldas da Rainha where we´ll visit a factory of typical china ware, then we follow to Buddha Eden Park wth an area of 35 hectares, designed and conceived by the Comenador José Berardo, in response to the barbaric act of destruction of the Giant Buddhas of Bamyan.

Afterwards we will do a visit to a winery where even today a renowned family hosts and still introduce to the world a unique estate as well as their wines.
In this estate it´s where is located of the oldest distilleries of Portugal. Enjoy your visit to Sanguinhal Estate and Winery.

Return to the hotel.

Leaving the hotel we´ll head to Alcobaça with its mighty monastery, national symbol, associated to the religious order of Cister, inside we can find the tombs of D. Pedro and D. Inês, the protagonists of the most known portuguese love story.

After we´ll do a break for lunch in the fisherman’s town of Nazaré, which we can trace its name to the legend of Nazareth, and the Virgin Mary cult.

Nowadays, Nazaré is a highly sort out place by millions of tourists that visit it every year, being the beach, the local handcraft and the gastronomy the must do and see. ( More recently it as also become known for for the surfing of a giant tiddle wave of 35 mt by Garreth Mcnamara)

Now we go visit Batalha, which had its origin due to the monastery of our Lady of Vitoria, a Dominican religious order monastery, ordered by D. João I in 1386 because f a promise to our Lady. It´s one of the most significant buildings of the flamboyant gothic architecture or otherwise known as late gothic.
Inside we have most important collections of stained glasses, the tombs of the second portuguese dynasty and the unfinished chapels.

Ending in Fatima for overnight

This Portuguese city in the district of Santarém became famous throughout the world for the miracle that occurred on 13 October 1917, the apparition of Our Lady.

The name of this old village comes from the Arab name Fãtimah, a Moorish princess who on the Christian reconquest was captured by the Portuguese army and offered to the Count of Ourém.
She converted to Christianity and was baptised with the name Oriana. The Count baptised the mountain lands Fátima in honour of the ancestry of his wife.

We cannot miss paying a short visit to the sanctuary.
